Austin proved last Sunday night that being environmentally aware doesn’t always have to mean wearing sandals made from hemp. Austin celebrated Earth day in runway style last Sunday night as hair stylists from various Aveda salons came together to put on a major hair fashion show to raise money for the Gulf Restoration Network and the Lower Mississippi Riverkeeper.
Normally I stay behind the camera at these types of events, but my friend Meryl of Spruce Salon asked me to help style. It’s hard to say no to charity, especially when it’s in the form of a fashion show. And when I walked into the Mohawk on Sunday night and saw a woman with a giant birdcage on her head, I knew I had made the right decision to get involved in such a fun show. While some salons such as Vanity chose to go the over-the-top costume route using giant fake hair pieces and had local designer Ruth Addy create one-of-a-kind garments to complete their looks, others like Jackson Ruiz kept things more runway with sleek and edgy mohawks borrowing clothing from high end designers like Alexander McQueen.
My girls at Spruce Salon chose to use only natural hair and create styles that were realistically achievable but still had a look of runway magic. With our inspiration including romance, color, and mermaids, I pulled clothing and accessories from one of my favorite local boutiques Etcetera Etc. which has perfectly unique and colorful pieces that are both feminine and modern.
