New Year’s Eve is almost here which means 1) you better have some sparkly shit in your closet or else you are screwed, and 2) it’s time to make lists recapping the popular stuff that happened in 2012!  Looking back at all my street style photos from the past year really confirms my opinion that Austin does in fact care about fashion and style.  It’s cool to have a visual diary of the trends of the past year and I can’t wait to take more photos of next year’s fashion. I have a feeling 2013 is gonna be a good year, so let’s say goodbye to 2012 properly by recapping the most popular fashion trends of the year, shall we?…

1) Neon

This year neon colors weren’t only popular with sorority and fraternity kids on the drag during Round Up week, but also became a favorite amongst the style conscious crowd looking for pops of color to add to their wardrobe.  Accessories such as bags and clutches were a popular way to participate in this bright color trend.

2) Funky Nails

Whether they had a colored ombre effect, painted smiley faces, 3 dimensional crystals, or were inspired by Lana del Rey, funky fingernails got all the attention this year and nail art that was once labeled “tacky” suddenly turned “trendy.”

3) Spikes and Studs

The year wasn’t complete until you poked someone’s eye out with your jean jacket.  I swear every denim jacket I saw in 2012 had some sort of spikes or studs embellishment.  But, the trend didn’t just stop at denim.  Bags, shoes, and pretty much everything was decked out in spikes and studs this year.

4) Dr. Martens

The quintessential footwear of the 90s, was once again embraced in 2012.  Doc Martens became a fashionable accessory for not only those reminiscing, but to those probably too young to even remember their popularity the first time around.  Did you dust off your Docs this year?

5) Peter Pan Collar

It might have started towards the end of 2011, but the Peter Pan Collar trend lasted well into 2012 and became even more popular amongst Austinites throughout the year.  The cute rounded collar once popular in the 60s was no longer just on vintage frocks, but on the newest clothing items as well.

6) Crazy Hair Colors

If you had ever wondered what it would be like to look like a real life Rainbow Brite character, 2012 was your chance to test it out. Pastel pink, shades of purple, and bright blue were all popular hair colors this year.  Don’t worry if the trend doesn’t last in 2013, because neither will your hair color.

7) Sheer Clothing

What might have once been a fashion faux pas, became a totally acceptable way of dressing this past year.  Although sheer clothing might have been a national trend this year, I have a feeling it’s going to stick around in Austin much longer than anywhere else.  It’s hot here and so are we, so us Austinites can get away with it.

There ya have it! Year 2012 in review.

What trends did you love? Which did you hate?  And what trends do you think will linger on into 2013, and which do you hope to never see again?
