Saturday night’s fashion show at the Delta Lumber and Millworks on the Eastside of Austin was a little different than most. If you are a Project Runway junkie like myself, then you will immediately compare these designs, which involved turning discarded trash into fashionable outfits, to the designs from the “Unconventional Challenge” episode that appears on every season of the tv show. The Trash Makeover Challenge show that took place in honor of the Texas Campaign For The Environment’s 21st anniversary was indeed unconventional as the designers made outfits out of materials such as yogurt cup foil lids, duct tape, bedding, plastic bags, and posters.
Austin designer Tina Sparkles walked away from the challenge with the Ready to Wear award for her design modeled by Shelly Neuman that included a skirt made from a stained table cloth that she picked up from the Blue Hanger. Austin designer Kari Perkins won the Avante Garde award for her 3 designs made from various plastic materials that depicted Austin landmarks- Barton Springs, the Greenbelt, and the Congress bridge. The Overall Winner of the night was Emmy Starr with her silver and black stylish space-age looks made from foils and plastics. The show was a fun way to bring awareness to the environment and remind ourselves that trash doesn’t always have to go to waste.
