I met Ruth Waddy at her trunk show on Saturday at Austin Rocks and her designs rocked my world. I snapped the above photo of Ruth wearing her own creation- a dress made entirely out of recycled bicycle tire rubber! Ruth explained to me the inspiration for her intricate designs came from ironwork patterns, and her idea to use recycled bicycle tire was inspired by her bike riding boyfriend. Her creativity and spunky cheery attitude could have had me believing she was an Austinite from birth. But having recently transplanted here from Portland, Ruth says “these are my people” of the Austinites she has encountered so far. Being from Texas originally Ruth seems like a perfect fit for Austin and I think she makes a great addition to the fashion scene here.
Being a true artist Ruth has worked with several different art forms but said she loves what she is designing now because it is art made out of a unique material, but is also wearable. And that’s what I love about her designs too! Who knew a couture gown could be made out of rubber?
Ruth will be showing her work again at Fashion Illegal this Monday and I recommend going to see it up close in person as it is some of the most interesting stuff I have seen during Austin Fashion Week so far.
